How Much Is an Ambulance Ride in California?

In California, what you pay depends far more on the level of service than on the word "ambulance." At West Coast Ambulance, estimated private-pay pricing starts around $70 for wheelchair van transport, $170 for stretcher van transport, $350 for a BLS ambulance, and $950 for critical care (SCT/CCT) transport — each with a base rate plus a per-mile charge.

Those figures are estimates for private-pay trips, not quotes. What you actually owe with Medi-Cal, Medicare, or a commercial plan depends entirely on your plan: coverage requires the transport to be medically necessary and authorized, cost-sharing such as deductibles and coinsurance may still apply, and some service levels — wheelchair and stretcher van, for example — are generally not covered by Original Medicare.
